The USCOM device (USCOM Pty Ltd, Sydney, Australia) measures cardiac output non-invasively using continuous wave Doppler ultrasound directed toward the cardiac outflow. The system is a non-invasive alternative to the Swan-Ganz method of measuring cardiac output.
In order to validate the system and improve the operational technique by the clinical end user, we have conducted studies on our mock circulation loop (MCL). The MCL is fully instrumented and can simulate multiple modes of heart abnormalities and failures. Therefore the known output of the MCL can be compared to that displayed by the USCOM system.
